After Hurricane Maria in 2017, our team began investigating why cell towers were so hard to rebuild after natural and manmade disasters. We found 2 major issues: architecture and maintenance.

Traditionally, cell towers are borderline custom products. From the metal tower itself to the radios and servers, the A/C for the server room, backup generators — no two cell sites are the same. This makes them far more expensive and difficult to repair. It also means each site requires far more maintenance. When we created the Bentocell to address this, we realized we'd solved a much larger issue — how to help carriers expand to the 3.5 Billion people still without Internet.

Originally, we created the Bentocell and our architecture as a temporary solution that could easily be deployed to active disaster zones. We quickly realized, though, that this problem isn't unique to disasters. It's the same reason carriers are struggling to expand — cell towers just aren't adaptable enough, and the architecture is far too convoluted. So we kept iterating until we'd created what truly believe is the worlds most user friendly AND reliable cell tower.

Usually permanence and adaptability don't go hand in hand, but that's how we got to todays issues in the telecom industry. Carriers won't see ROI from covering the next 3.5 Billion people with typical convoluted equipment. New solutions must be adaptable enough for any environment and need minimal setup requirements. But cell sites are critical infrastructure, they also have to be insanely reliable once installed. It would also be nice to be able to upgrade them (say from 4G to 5G) without ripping out and replacing expensive hardware.

We call this balance permanent adaptability.

First and foremost, we design for it. When there's a choice between a hardcoded solution and a broader solution that emulates that hardcoded solution, we'll always go broad. This is why Bentocells use entirely software defined radio (SDR) and a highly accurate wideband amplifier with industry grade filtering to handle any cellular band from 600 MHz to 4 GHz. Does any carrier use every single band? No, absolutely not. But by making the Bentocell this adaptable, we only need one SKU, one manufacturing line, and no custom hardware. It will always be more affordable and less error prone than a custom built, single band device.

Cofounded by an aerospace engineer and a hacker, our team is built on diversity of thought. Actually, name any industry, and we probably have someone who's worked there. We also have the best of the telecom industry. By combining diverse backgrounds with deep industry expertise, it's in our nature to question everything and then build it better.
